We Have The Place Surrounded.

How hard work, talent and determination can take you far in music.

We are gattered here with the Viña del Mar Natives We Have The Place Surrounded (WHTPS from now on), the band is formed by Leo (drums), Javo (second guitar), Gaston (bass) and Nelson (guitar and vocals). The band started about a year ago and with the release of their debut album "Efforts" they have created a buzz for delivering a strong live set and for the sound and composition of their album.

I was wondering, how was the process of writing the songs for your album?

Nelson: It was mainly written by me. I ussualy came to the rehersal space with a song and from that point on the rest of the band added their contribution and that way the songs started to get done.

Do you have many fights amongst yourselfs while you where composing the album?

Javo: No, we are first and foremost friends so we all know each other very well, the fighting was kept to a minimun.

Gastón: The process was actualy very fun so when the creativity is flowing it´s a good time, so we didn´t fight often just when it was necessary.

What kind of food do you like to eat? Is there any unusual food you like?

Nelson: We eat a lot of fast food and all sort of add watter and eat food, like noodle soup, pre-made rissoto, the mash potatoes that come in a box etc. We have our own place with Gaston so healthy food or cooking skills aren´t necessary one of our concerns.

What are your main influences in music?

Javo: Most of all alternative rock comes to mind, bands like Interpol, Lost in the Trees, Radiohead, Two Door Cinema Club and many others. The influences are mostly in the sound they get from their instruments more than the composition part of things, we don´t get influenced by the lyrics of this bands or they composition style i´ts mainly the sound that achieve.

What would be you ultimate dream in life?

Nelson: I think that a nice dream to fullfill would be to live from music, to have a stable life to be able to pay our bills, and of course would be really fun to play in other countries England comes to mind almost inmediatly.

This finishes up todays interview, we thank the guys in the band and hope to see them live very soon, keep yourselves in the loop to find out about tour dates and new releases, have fun and support artists always you can.

Interview with a famous person.

Roger Waters on the Howard Stern Show.

Inside the mind of one of the most influential composers of the last 50 years.

In the year 2010 radio show host Howard Stern had Roger Waters the creative mind behind Pink floyd on his program in the frame of the promotion for Water´s tour of The Wall. Here are some of the questions that the interviewer asked Roger Waters.

One of the first questions asked was, when he started to play music.

Waters responded that he had an aunt that gave him his first guitar for his fourteen's birthday. He said that it was very hard because it was a metal string guitar so it made his fingers bleed due to the harshness of the strings.

I believe that this fact might have helped him, he became a bass player after all so harder strings could have given him more strenght in his fingers wich is very necesary for playing the bass.

Another interesting question was about the composition credits for The Wall, if that record generated completely from his head or if he colaborated with his bandmates.

The answer from Waters was that all the ideas just came, he thinks about 96 percent from his head and they´re officialy his.

I think this is unfair because there were great musicians by his side, the keyboard player Richard Wright was a classically trained musician wich helped a great deal with the arranging and composing of the songs, the intelectual idea of the album was indeed Water's creation but without the talent and inspiration from the rest of the band the album wouldnt have been as good as it is and it would have sound diferent in my opinion.

Following on this question Howard Stern asked Waters if he believed that most of Pink Floyd stuff were his and if he wished that he has done it solo instead of with the rest of the band.

He said, absolutely not, that they were a very good team when they were younger and that in the beggining Sid Barret was writing everything but then he had to quit the band because of health issues, then David (Gilmour) joined in the band and from 68 to the release of Dark Side of the Moon they were a tightly knit group.

My opinion on this is that before fame became undeniable the band had it's best years, after the release of The Dark Side of the Moon the band achieved their goal, they had conquered financial traquility and worldwide fame so the urge of being an important band was gone and they could never find another goal as clear an important as that one.

Roger Waters is without a doubt one of the most important song writters of his time and his involvement in political causes had made him an even more relevant figure. He's an artist with strong believes and a very inteligent person. To my opinion his contribution to music has made the world a better place and the influence of his creation are imposible to deny by any musician.

Life at the University

Life at the University

Contents of the mind of a comparably old student.

I study at Santo Tomas University, it´s suposed to be a catholic university but we haven´t had many religious classes though. My favourite professor is Gonzalo Pelayo he is a person who can be very patient but sometimes he looses his cool. He taught a class that was very useful to me when I studied under him in another institute. My classmates are very funny and they are people who I can trust in. Sometimes I wish there would be many more practical classes but I know that all that we´re learning it´s going to be helpful when we graduate.

Sometimes I think what if after university i can´t find work because of the nature of my degree, but it´s what i´ve chosen so i´m going to have to deal with that no matter what. I wish i had more time to work but with my schedule at the university there´s little time to dedicate to that, maybe if i studied at night i could have more free time to work but sadly my career is only imparted during the day so that option is not available. I can´t hardly wait to graduate I imagine it must be a very exciting moment, I might as well prepare to get emotional on that day, maybe a few tears will run down my face. The expectations are big for the rest of my life even though there aren´t a lot of people making a decent living with our career, i can only rely in my skills (not so much in my responsability) no one can say what´s going to happen in the future so I also might as well keep my hopes high and do my best.
